Race for the Cure

So I've entered a marathon. Sorry if that made you fall off your chair. It's the Susan G Komen Race for the Cure (for breast cancer). When I signed up for the marathon, I had 8 weeks to get in shape to do 5K (or just over 3 miles). The thing is, the marathon is tomorrow and 8 weeks have passed and I haven't walked more than half a mile to get ready for this thing. H..O..L..Y CRAP! Needless to say, I am nervous as HELL! I really hope I don't collapse or something crazy. My leader at Weight Watchers said her young daughter wanted to enter the marathon but she didn't know what to do with her because my leader was planning on running the race. I offered to walk with her daughter and she accepted. I'm actually really glad to have someone to walk with, I'm hoping it will make the time go by faster. I bought a Klean Kanteen with a shoulder strap and everything so that I will have water without having to carry a stupid bottle. I'm not really sure what I should wear though. I only have jeans and t-shirts. I was thinking of checking out Walmart to see if they have any work out pants and shirts I could wear - but, Oh God, nothing spandex.

I'm trying to tell myself not to worry about tomorrow - and by this time tomorrow I'll be finished with it all. It is exciting for me because this is something I have on my list of things to do in life, so I will get to cross it off the list. Most people would say, ok, 3 miles, big deal. But when you are as big as I am, walking up one flight of stairs can be daunting, let alone walking 3 miles. I hope one day I will think, Oh good, a 3 mile marathon, a nice warm up for my workout. I do want to be THAT person.

I guess that's all for now. I will try to post again this weekend after the marathon with how it went and the final verdict on it all.

Weight Watchers Core

Last week I "fully" returned to the Weight Watchers program. I thought I did very well, counting my points, eating properly - I never went over my points for the week. However, I lost 0.4 lbs. Ew. What the hell was that?! It angered me so much that I finally took the leap and decided to try Weight Watchers Core. Core means you do not count points for what you eat. You eat only what is on their Core list of foods. It's an extensive list of fruits, veggies and meats, along with some fat-free milk products, certain oils, and a maximum of one whole grain wheat product per day. I thought that this was going to be very difficult, not being able to eat anything I wanted. Um... I was WRONG!

Okay, so we went grocery shopping and I stocked up on a whole bunch of Core foods, most of which belonged to some Core recipes I had found. Yes, it was very expensive buying all that healthy food (let's just say I could eat McDonald's 3 times a day for 7 days and it would cost me about 1/3 of the price of the good-for-you food). I set out Monday morning on a mission to lose weight! Monday for lunch I made myself a delicious tuna steak (my first one ever) with some egg beaters scrambled eggs and fat-free cheese. Then for dinner I had southwest flavored pork loin with a corn and bean salad (so filling). I realized that between meals I was not at all hungry! Usually I want to snack all the time, which I think is because on flex, I limit myself to about 10 points per meal (some Weight Watchers frozen dinners are 7 points, and they don't leave you feeling satisfied). Then, Tuesday, all I had was 1/2 cup of the bean and corn salad and a cup of pink grapefruit. Guess what? I got full! What?! On vegetables and fruit?! Yay! For dinner I made scallops and baked sweet potatoes. Again, yum! Wednesday for lunch I made scrambled eggs (egg beaters) with corn and bean salad on top and a dollop of fat-free sour cream with a ham steak! A ham steak - oh boy! Finally, dinner was Spanish rice (1 cup of brown rice between 2 people) with chicken, shrimp AND scallops! It was amazing - however, it did take absolutely FOREVER to make! In the last few days I have eaten more interesting meals than I ever did on the Flex plan!

Oh, and the best part? In three days I'm already down just over 3 lbs! HA!

It took me a year to finally listen to everyone at Weight Watchers that I should try Core, but I did, and I want to stay on it for awhile. We are going out for an anniversary dinner and you would think, uh oh, there goes the weight loss, but, I can go to a steak house, have a big 'ol steak, a salad, steamed veggies and a shrimp cocktail appetizer and still be on Core. This rocks!

Tip of the day: Remember kids, stay away from white sugar!!

After the Wedding

It's about time for me to get back on the weight loss wagon! There's no better way for me to get motivated than to write about it!

Alright, so the wedding ceremony and all of the celebrating that went along with it (celebrating = food) really did me in. I gained a whole 6 pounds in about a month! It had taken me about that long to get those 6 pounds off. At least I know I can do it this time.

First of all, I should say that I joined Weight Watchers in July 2007 after realizing I was on the road to very early death. I weighed in at 305 pounds - I'm 5'5". It is now almost a year later and after the weight loss and gain again, I'm only down 20 pounds. I tend to make excuses about why the weight isn't coming off - such as: I was stressed about the wedding, we can't afford the expensive healthy food, etc. But really, I suppose that's all a bunch of crap. I must say though, that Weight Watchers is definitely your best bet for weight loss because you learn to eat the foods you already eat the proper way (portion control). I tried Jenny Craig once for about a year and the weight loss results were about the same for me, except I spent $200.00 per week on their food and the extra groceries they require you to buy. For one person that is a little ridiculous. Not to mention, when you finish losing the weight, you aren't going to continue eating their food, so you are prone to gain again because you have free range on "real" food. Also, keep in mind, there is a hefty membership fee. With Weight Watchers I pay about $40 per month for my unlimited meetings membership. I really recommend going to the meetings. You get so many tips from people, the leaders have all lost weight and maintained their weight loss so they know what they're talking about. Also, with my membership, I get Weight Watchers Online tools - which are great to keep track of your weight, your daily points, and to find lots of new recipes.
Wow, this has become a commercial!

Anyways, I go to meetings every Monday - it's my therapy! I hope to post once a week on my progress. For now I will leave you with pictures of my 6 month difference in weight (from July 2007 to January 2008)

Intro

I think I've put off posting long enough, and although I'm not entirely ready to start this blog, I'm writing something (anything!) so the page doesn't look so bare!

This blog will be about being fat (if you don't like that word, I don't care) and about my fight to get rid of the fat. Because my life since age 10 has been completely about this subject I think I have more than enough to say and it's an ongoing struggle, so each week I should have something new to say.

For the most part, I'm doing this blog for me, so I can clearly see my progress and failures and, I suppose, for a kind of therapy! So, if it pleases you to read, great! If not, that's fine too.
